The Supreme Court had issued show cause on Sunday,
4th Dec, asking the government why it had imposed a ban on the broadcast
of BBC Nepali service through Radio Sagarmatha FM, South Asia's first
community radio.
The court also ordered the government to be present before it on Wednesday
to discuss on whether to issue an interim order or not on the case.
The ban was imposed last week despite a Supreme Court order. Last week,
the court had issued an interim order to the government not to shut
down the independent community radio.
Though the radio resumed its broadcast following the court order, the
government issued yet another directive, violating the order, asking
the station not to air news and stop broadcast of BBC Nepali service.
It was in response to yet another writ that the apex court removed restrictions
on broadcast of news by FM stations.
Acting Chief Justice Kedar Prasad Giri passed the order today in response
to a writ petition filed by Bhupendra Basnet, general secretary of the
Nepal Forum of Environmental Journalists. The writ has sought the court
to order the government to allow the radio to air the BBC Nepali service.
