NEFEJ has come a long way in the publication field. On top of the line is the regular publication of HAKA-HAKI, a monthly magazine in Nepali. It is a forum for debate on various aspects of development. Each edition of the magazine features an insightful cover story dealing with various aspects of the issue involved. It also carries stories of success, problems of development activities at the grassroots level and efforts by communities to improve the quality of their life. Some of the issues focused on misuse of foreign assistance, public education, politicization of milk distribution and life of the porters. HAKA-HAKI also covered a wide range of topics like environmental injustice by the coal mining in the mid-western region, the crisis faced by Raute indigenous community and forest nomads, environmental inequality meted out to the Chepangs, another forest nomads of the mid hills; 26 years of continued wrong by a dam in mid hills; and environmental unfairness by a proposed high dam in the Sapta Koshi river; and the effect of the armed conflict on environment and poorest of the poor.
The magazine also raised various issues related to community forest spreading throughout the country, which includes examples of inequity in the process of resource sharing, role of community forest to empower people and burden of tax on community forest, etc. The magazine did not limit itself to issues of environmental concern. It covered the social and economic issues linked to discrimination and the Dalits, the so-called untouchables, women and indigenous people. The magazine is sent to 4,000 schools free
of cost.
