The period following 1990 saw proliferation of media houses which came up with daily newspapers. One can say the period marked the advent of print, audio visual, FM radio, online news portals and cable televisions. The Media Training Center (MTC) was launched with the objective of training a pool of journalists who can take up the jobs in the blossoming Fourth Estate.
Print: Currently lots of daily, weekly, fortnightly and monthly papers magazine has been in the market. Some are emerging.
Television: On the field of television, there are more than 10 stations. Add to it lots of production houses, which are producing television programs. They are struggling when it comes to hire trained journalists and producers.
FM Radio: FM broadcasting is blossoming too, with the government already issuing 239 licenses. Out of them, 130 are community radios. They are also in want of trained radio journalists. Community Radio Support Centre (CRSC) under NEFEJ is conducting training for the benefit of aspiring radio journalists. Hence what has been taken up by MTC will be of use to CRSC.
Cable Television: Cable operators purvey satellite channels to subscribers. They are present in nearly all the 75 districts of the country. While they are trying to extend quality service, they are not able to do so due to lack of trained journalists and camerapersons. The MTC will help train people who can produce local program on local issues.
Photography: A picture says thousand words. The MTC will be promoting photography by turning out trained photographers. NEFEJ had already started photo journalism training in collaboration with different organizations.
Similarly, the MTC will work for the benefit of online media.
