NEFEJ FIVH EXCHANGE PROGRAM

NEFEJ and Framtiden i Våre Hender (FIVH) embarked on exchange program involving one environmental journalist from each country. Under the program, both the partners agreed to exchange journalists. NEFEJ, however, receives financial cooperation from the Oslo based organization, which once translated into English, reads “Future In Our Hands.” Agreement to this effect was signed on September 2002. Under this program, the selected environmental journalists work with NEFEJ and FIVH respectively, contributing to both the media work in these organizations and to media in their home country, including their own respective organizations. The funding by Fredskorpset goes towards airfare of the two beneficiaries and their related expenses while working in the field. The fund coming from the Fredskorpset also goes towards producing a television documentary together with the AVD of NEFEJ.

The objectives of the exchange program are:

  • To add value to the job undertaken by partners;
  • To produce articles and other media products for the media in Norway and Nepal and;
  • To broaden the horizon of the exchange fellows concerning knowledge and skills.

As part of the program, the exchange fellows are expected to understand and write about environmental issues, including impact of hydropower projects, forestry related projects, issues associated with wildlife management, urbanization and waste management, activism linked to civil society and national parks in the country they visit. Apart from it, they are also obliged to cover cultural differences and how environmental problems might shape these in an integral way. They are also expected to understand and file reports on development aid perspectives of both the receiver and donor nation, file report on assistance policies. They are also obliged to file report on how the aid is misused.

Moreover, they are also expected to understand and file report on global debate on environment, economy, and poverty and so on and so forth by linking them to the international institutions like the World Trade Organization (WTO), International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the United Nations (UN), among others. Add to it the obligation to understand and write about tourism potential based on the concept of wilderness or nature and culture.
