The Urban Environment Watch, program is also equally alert on its mission of overseeing the undesirable development in the urban areas.
Its current attention is focused on the uncontrolled growth of urbanization in the Kathmandu Valley, which is unfolding all the demerits of urbanization. Within the last 20 years, 63 percent of its open area has been reduced to 41 percent. If this situation continues, within another 20 to 25 years, we can hardly find an open area in the Valley. Urban planning in this place has never been properly implemented. There are about 115 brick kilns that burn 30 tons of coal and 165 tons of wood every day, one of the biggest sources of air pollution. The increasing number of vehicles including the 20-year-old vehicles is another menace to public health.
As far as open areas are concerned, they are shrinking with the passage of time. NEFEJ had raised this issue way back in 1991 and demanded that the open public space should be preserved for the safety and welfare of the urban residents. But no attention has gone into it. As a result, we find hardly any open space for healthy breathing. We are not even able to conserve the existing parks and ponds. The group has also raised the issue of the Outer Ring Road being built under the Chinese aid.
