HANDS ON ASIA
Localizing Hands On in Asia project takes on an internationally acclaimed set of communications materials and adapts them to suit national and local needs in four countries in the Asia Pacific region.
Hands On is a highly successful communications initiative by Earth Report Productions and the global development charity, ITDG (now Practical Action). Using television, video, print and online components, it showcases tried and tested solutions to day-to-day development problems faced by families, communities and businesses in different parts of the world.
Since 1997, more than 200 Hands On stories have been produced, covering sectors as diverse as energy, water and sanitation, waste management, food processing, construction, transport, forestry, fisheries, fair trade and micro finance. Hands On is a regular part of the award-winning Earth Report series that is broadcast weekly on BBC World, China Central TV and many other television channels.
This project is localizing and promoting the content of several dozen Hands On stories in Cambodia, India, Nepal and Lao PDR. This is accomplished through the production of local language versions of both television and print material, and the distribution of localized content to the public through broadcasts and public outreach activities.
All content produced under this project is available at cost-recovery prices to educational, civil society and other users in the four countries - and beyond.
During the UN Decade for Education on Sustainable Development (DESD: 2005 - 2014) it is this kind of practical, experience based approaches to sustainable development that need to be identified, showcased and promoted. So they can be replicated in similar situations by like-minded people. So they may inspire more eco-entrepreneurs to take positive action to help themselves -- and the planet.
Localizing Hands On in Asia is a regional media project of TVE Asia Pacific, implemented in collaboration with national partners in Cambodia, India, Nepal and Laos. The project is supported by a grant from the Toyota Environmental Activities Grant Program in Japan.
