NEFEJ is a pioneer among the non-governmental organizations promoting the environmental journalism in Nepal. It led its foundation stone on June 1, 1986, and since then it has been providing the forum to debate, study, influence public policy, and raising awareness for conservation and sustainable development.
The asset of the NEFEJ is its members, which include journalists and experts from wide range of areas within environment and conservation. NEFEJ provides different types of membership and the total membership count is one hundred eighteen (118) as of May 2011. It provides "Full Member" to the environmental journalists and the members under this criterion include journalists working in different reputed national newspapers like Kantipur, Annapurna Post, Nagarik, Gorkhapatra, The Kathmandu Post, The Himalayan Times, and The Republica among others. Similarly "Associated Member" category includes natural scientists, social scientists, and bureaucrats who are willing to/able to contribute to address causes of environment and biodiversity conservation. Another type of membership is the "Honorary Member", which is provided to the distinguished individuals who have made extraordinary contributions in the field of environmental conservation, awareness generation and sustainable development. Some of the honorary members include Rajendra Dahal, Press advisor to the President of Nepal Ram Baran Yadav; Ganesh Shah, former minister of environment; Raghu Pant, principal advisor to former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, and some other notable individuals.  Likewise, "Institutional Membership" is provided to the legal entities sharing ideas of NEFEJ.
Throughout its 25-year long journey, NEFEJ, along with its members and stakeholders, has continuously been working in the environment conservation, awareness generation, and sustainable development. There are several instances of achievement of success in these fields. It has played an important role in creating environment for formulation and amendment of the environmental laws and rights. Furthermore, it has also been successful in advocating for the proper management of solid waste generated in the capital.
NEFEJ has been carrying out its activities through its four (4) major departments: Radio Sagarmatha, Community Radio Support Center (CRSC), Media Training Center (MTC), and Audio-Visual Department.
Radio Sagarmatha, established in 1997, is the first independent community radio in South Asia. It conducts its programs for 18 hours a day (5am-11pm) from Sunday to Saturday. It has been successful in promoting open public discourse on public issues, and in many other community activities. Its commitment to public-interest broadcasting
nored with various awards. It has received Press Council Award in 2067 and recently (2068) it received "Environment Journalism Award" from Ministry of Environment.
Another important NEFEJ department is CRSC-established in early 2000 to facilitate the community radio movement. Since then CRSC has been actively supporting and promoting the growth and strengthening of community radios. Almost all the present community radio stations in operation have worked closely with CRSC/NEFEJ.
Media Training Centre (MTC) is another vital department of NEFEJ. It conducts training in the areas like print media, audio-visual/television, FM radio, photography, and cable television, in collaboration with other departments. It also provides online training in different fields.
Audio-Visual Unit (AVU) is other major department, which produces weekly television magazine "Aankhijhyal"- one of the biggest successes ever achieved by NEFEJ and provide the technical support of documentary and producing documentary. AVU unit was established in 1990 and it has been successful in incorporating issues related to social, environment and sustainable development concerns. Aankhijhyal is aired every Tuesday at 5.05pm in Nepal Television and 6.30pm in Avenues Television and several other television channels also air this program on various times.
